If you’re anything like us here at Wowzer HQ, then you love doing something special for your dogs, but sometimes worry about the ingredients present in the treats you give. While Seattle is stellar for all sorts of natural and organic dog treats, one of the best ways to ensure your best friend’s health and happiness is to bake their treats yourself. While it might sound like another chore to add to your list, baking can be fun, and with an exciting new Wowzer match, you might just cook up some romance. After all, the fastest way to a dog owner’s heart is through their pup’s stomach. To aid you in your quest for canine confections, we’ve put together a quick list of recipes for homemade dog treats that will have your pup licking their chops, no culinary degree required.

1. Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

If you’re far more familiar with the workings of a delivery app then you are your own kitchen, this one’s for you. This simple recipe will have you whipping up about a dozen delicious dog biscuits while having plenty of time for chatting with your date.

You’ll need:

  • 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour (not all-purpose!)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • ½  teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Then merely preheat your oven to 350° and mix all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl with a little water. Roll the dough out on a baking sheet until it’s about half an inch thick, then cut it into half-inch squares. Toss the baking sheet into the oven for about 45 minutes. When it’s done, your pup will have a delicious, peanut butter treat, perfect for taking to the dog park. Let the biscuits cool down and you’re ready to go.

2. Doggie Sweet Potato French Fries

This recipe is for you if your pooch gives you their best-begging eyes every time you come home with a bag of Dick’s burgers. While any fried food will have your pup feeling blue, these sweet potato fries are baked and specially formulated for the canine pallet.

You’ll need:

  • 1-2 sweet potatoes (duh)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • salt
  • parsley
  • basil

Preheat your oven to 425°, peel the potatoes, then slice them into long, skinny, fry shapes. Mix potatoes, oil and spices in either a mixing bowl or a sealed plastic bag. Be sure not to over-spice your fries; your pup might not have the complex spice pallet you do. Turn out the fries on a baking sheet, then bake for fifteen minutes. Take this down moment to get to know your date! After the fifteen are up, flip the fries over and then bake for another fifteen minutes. Let cool and you’ll have a healthy treat that your dog will love so much they’ll stop begging for your fries!

3. Chicken and Cheese Doggie Delight

If you know your way around a kitchen and can tell a Kenmore from a Keurig, the first two recipes might have been a little simple. This one will give you the opportunity to flex your baking prowess for your date and get your pet a treat they won’t be able to resist.

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup margarine
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • ¾ cup cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¾  cup shredded cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ½ cup wheat flour

Set your oven to preheat to 325°—remember to grease your baking sheets—then mix together your rolled oats, margarine and boiling water in a large mixing bowl. Once they are mixed, set the bowl aside for ten minutes or so. In a separate bowl, combine the honey, cornmeal and bouillon. Take the cornmeal, honey and bouillon mixture and combine it with the oats and margarine. Mix in the egg and milk at the same time until the whole mixture is smooth. Your dough should be pretty watery at this point, so slowly fold in your flour until the dough is workable. Show your muscles off to your date while you knead the mixture for a couple of minutes. Then, roll the mixture out to half-inch thickness and cut it into 1×4” rectangles (or use a cookie cutter). Make sure none of the cookies are touching on the baking sheet, then pop them in the oven for 35 minutes, or until golden brown. Let them cool for twenty minutes, and you’re done. These smell great, so don’t be surprised if your dog starts wagging their tail as soon as you start!

Remember, the best thing about baking is sharing it with someone special, two or four-legged. So download the Wowzer app as soon as you can, and find a person and a dog that will appreciate your baking game.
